Cartwright promises to strengthen Social Security

Posted

Congressman Matt Cartwright released the following statement commemorating the 89th anniversary of the Social Security Act on August 14:

“Eighty-nine years ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law one of America’s great achievements—the Social Security Act. For generations, Social Security has fulfilled a sacred, American promise. After working for all of their lives, our seniors can retire with dignity.

“I promise our seniors and their families: I will never sell you out by cutting the benefits you earned or trying to raise the retirement age. It’s time for the wealthy to pay their fair share, so we can strengthen Social Security, expand benefits and address the cost of living for our seniors.”

Cartwright is a long-standing, outspoken advocate for strengthening Social Security. He believes a benefit increase is long overdue, as Social Security’s cost of living formulas have not been updated since 1972.

Cartwright’s advocacy has earned him the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM) cycle after cycle. His opponent, in contrast, accepted six figures in donations from members of the Republican Study Committee, which represents over 80 percent of House Republicans. The Republican Study Committee advocates for cutting trillions—yes, trillions—from Social Security and Medicare.
