GLEN SPEY, NY — For the next two weeks, the Town of Lumberland will advertise for proposals on the replacement of the 15-year-old roof on the former highway garage, which is now leased to the Eldred School District as a bus garage. The May 8 decision came after a short debate which resulted in a four to one approval vote.

Officials decided on a flat-roof material product for the replacement based on an engineering review, which they discussed at the board’s workshop session earlier this month. Councilman James Akt opposed the decision, saying he had not seen the engineering study. “I didn’t get one. There were not enough copies. You’re not ramming this down my throat,” he said.

Details about the project were sparse. Saying they were advised against suggesting a possible cost prior to the bidding, the board gave no projection, nor did they reveal the size of the roof.

Highway superintendent Don “Bosco” Hunt said his former headquarters garage measures about 50-feet by 80-feet

Hunt drew Akt’s criticism after reporting that his crew would be “truing and leveling” 4.5 miles of road during the summer season with a grader. Akt, who also does paving work, said “No one does truing and leveling with a grader anymore. It’s a thing of the past.”

Akt has been arguing unsuccessfully against Hunt’s recommendations for the town’s purchase of a paving machine for several years. He recalled the speed of recent paving work at the bridge construction site on Route 97. “Use a paving machine and it’s done in one operation,” Akt said.

Also on the agenda, supervisor Jenny Mellan reported that a 170-page county report on the distribution of emergency supplies during the severe storms of last March and May was on file at the town clerk’s office.

The board also appointed Sara Mayes as the summer youth program science assistant and Aleah Batzans and Mickaela Gulls as program aides; authorized the historian’s $1,432 budget transfer for a computer purchase; approved the MacKenzie Elementary PTA’s use of the ball field for its May 17 walk-a-thon fundraiser; heard code enforcement officer David Sparling report that his clerk, Christy Flynnis, is now a certified building inspector and noted that the new building department brochure is now available online; noted that the Lumberland Memorial Day observance will take place at 10 a.m. on May 27; heard Bill McKerrell report that the Lumberland Lions Club is sponsoring a town-wide litterpluck on May 18; and that the annual Port Jervis Soap Box Derby will again take place at City Hall on June 9.
