JEFFERSONVILLE, NY – What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day 2022 than to host a baseball and softball tourney on Sunday, May 8?

In reality, the Sullivan West varsity baseball and softball tournament was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 7, but was postponed until the following day in order for the fields of play to dry out a bit in the wake of several days of rather inclement weather.

The tourney was held in three consecutive baseball and softball games, the hardballers playing at Lions Field, while the softball teams competed at Lauren Hughson Memorial Field.

Three area high schools made up the tourney: Sullivan West, Liberty and Monticello.

Baseball: First game—Monticello 5, Sullivan West 1. Second game—Monticello 14, Liberty 4. Third game—Liberty 13, Sullivan West 5. Monticello took first place honors; Liberty took second place.

Softball: First game—Monticello 7, Sullivan West 6. Second game—Monticello 8, Liberty 7. Third game—Sullivan West 16, Liberty 0. Monticello placed first and Sullivan West took home the second-place trophy.

Baseball, third-game highlights: Liberty’s Elliel Lima went 2-for-3, with 3 runs scored—a double and a walk. Sullivan West’s Jacob Hubert was 1-for-2, a run scored, and a sacrifice fly for an RBI.

Softball, third-game highlights: Sullivan West leaped out to a 4-0 lead in the first frame, and then followed up with 3 in the second; a whopping 8 runs crossed the plate in the third. They added their final run in the fifth inning. The game was called after five frames due to the 10-run rule.

A sports scribbler’s highlights: chocolate cake by Riley Ernst’s mom, and as an added post-game delight, cupcakes by Lady Bulldogs’ Karlee Diehl.

“Given the choice between vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, it’s always chocolate,” said Anthony Durkin, coach of the Sullivan West varsity softball team.

At the conclusion of the tourney, Coach Durkin handed out yellow roses to the team, with the admonition to take them home to their mothers in recognition of their special day.
