SCRANTON, PA — The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education welcomed 85 new resident physicians into its four residency programs on Match Day.

Sixty-six doctors will train and deliver care in northeast PA.

A graduate medical education program is a formal, hospital-sponsored or hospital-based training program for people who have earned an M.D. or D.O. degree.

Match Day, part of the National Resident Matching Program, is one of the most important events and one of the most competitive processes in the medical school experience, according to a statement from the Wright Center. On the third Friday of March each year, fourth-year medical students, as well as their graduate medical education programs, learn where they will complete the next stage of their training.

The Wright Center matched residents in internal medicine, family medicine, psychiatry, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Its residency programs are located throughout the U.S.

The physicians will begin their first-year residencies on July 1 in Scranton.

The incoming residents hail from China, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Dubai, Egypt, India, Iran, Libya, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States. The residency programs received 5,882 applications and interviewed 811 candidates.

HONESDALE, PA — During National Dental Assistants Recognition Week, March 5 through 11, Wayne Memorial Community Health Centers (WMCHC) recognized its staff of dental assistants and expanded function dental assistants (EFDAs).

The week salutes “these front-line professionals, whose skills and training make dental visits productive, safe and as pleasant as possible,” said a WMCHC spokesperson.

The observance is sponsored by the American Dental Assistants Association.

WMCHC offers dental services at offices in two locations—Together For Health Dental Center in Honesdale and Pike Dental Center in Lords Valley. The 12 dental assistants employed between both sites perform diverse jobs, ranging from working chairside with the dentist, to taking X-rays, to infection control and sterilization.

Those trained as EFDAs can also perform tasks such as filling teeth and applying sealants and fluoride treatments.

“Dental assistants are vital to the success of our dental practices,” said Nichole Yannone, dental office manager for WMCHC. The week, she said, “is a time to thank them for the significant impact they make to our patients and the dental health of the general public.”

WMCHC dental offices accept most insurances and offer a sliding fee scale based on income.

For an appointment, call 570/251-6534 to be seen in Honesdale, or 570/775-7818 for Lords Valley. Visit www.wmchc.net for more information.

Hospice volunteer training sessions at Wayne Memorial

HONESDALE, PA — Wayne Memorial Hospital’s hospice team, part of its Home Health Department, is looking for volunteers. Those interested are asked to enroll by Monday, April 10; see below.

Training is offered on two Saturdays, April 22 and April 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., plus one evening in May, on a date to be determined.

When a patient’s life expectancy is limited, “Wayne Memorial offers comfort just a phone call away,” a spokesperson said. The hospice team provides compassionate care for the dying so they may live their lives to the fullest. Volunteers can help both the patient and the team in many ways.

Hospice care neither hastens nor postpones death; instead, it eases symptoms of discomfort and offers scientifically advanced pain control, supporting a patient’s desire to die with dignity and with as much control as possible in the comfort of their own home. The hospital’s multidisciplinary team of professionals and trained volunteers understand how unique the dying process is for everyone involved.

Wayne Memorial offers services in Wayne, Pike, Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties. Volunteers from each of these areas are welcome. Those interested must attend all three sessions at the hospital in Honesdale, as well as the hospital’s general volunteer orientation.

There is no cost for the training.

“If you have time and compassion to share,” the spokesperson said, call 570/253-8737 or email malicky@wmh.org to enroll by Monday, April 10.
