Bears ‘rumble’ over Yellowjackets

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — In the opinion of this sports scribbler, the Tri-Valley cheerleading squad played a significant role in sparking the Bears boys’ varsity basketball team’s 49-28 home-stand win over the Yellowjackets of Eldred on Friday, January 21.

Throughout the game, the energetic cheerleaders rallied the crowd with chants of “Let’s rumble!” while holding signs in support of the Bears’ hoopsters. During a brief break between the third and final frames, they performed spirited routines in front of the home team fans in the stands.

Oh, and now back to the game.

In the first period, Tri-Valley edged Eldred 10-5, and went on to post higher numbers in the remaining frames: 17-11, 10-2 and 12-10.

The highlight of the fourth period was the Bears’ Boe Mueller sinking a couple of “three-pointers” from outside the paint.

“We got out-hustled, we didn’t do our job, let them swat three-pointers at the end of the game… and our free throws were horrible,” said Bill Furler, coach of the Eldred bucketeers (3-5 overall, 3-1 league). “We gave up a lot of early baskets.”

Noting that he had to pull up a player from JV, because one of his starters was out visiting a potential college, Furler said, “We’re only going to get better… we had no wins last year.”

In the current season of hoops, Eldred fields three freshmen: Trai Kaufmann, a 6-foot-1-inch shooting guard; Elijah Gonzalez, a 5-foot-11-inch point guard; and 6-foot-1-inch power forward James Deyermond.

Kevin Delaney, helmsman of the Bears (3-8, 1-2) summed up the game. “We came out a little slow, coming off a snow day and a tough one-point loss against Seward at the buzzer… we played well as a team.”

The Bears boast three seniors, all captains: Gavin Clarke, Zach Kitaychik and Ian Mullen.

“We’re in contention to make sectionals,” said Delaney, with a coach’s optimistic eye on the future.
