Longtime Narrowsburg fixture retires

Posted

When Charlie Knapp first started cutting hair in Narrowsburg, the Second World War had ended just three years earlier. Knapp took over the business from his father who started in back in 1911.

Knapp has now officially retired, saying he was forced to do so because of a problem with his arm. But, he said, there will still be a hair-cutter in town, as Diane Daley is still taking customers. Knapp and Daley joined forces in one business location since 2004.

Asked what he will do with the extra time, he said, “There are always things to do around the house, and anyway things go pretty fast, when you get to be 83.”

Knapp not only served as a barber for 30 years, but also served the community in other ways. He was a member of the Tusten Town Board for 30 years, and he was also a member of the Narrowsburg Fire Department for many years.

Neighbors on Erie Avenue remember his lawn mowing skills as well, as he has kept St. Paul’s Lutheran Church’s grass cut for years, probably decades.
