Sullivan County Press Release:

MONTICELLO, NY – Due to severe damage from Tuesday’s thunderstorms, Sullivan County Manager Josh Potosek has extended the State of Emergency for parts of Sullivan County through this weekend.

A State of Emergency is issued under Article 2B of New York State Executive Law and in this case applies only to the townships of Highland and Tusten. Note that after 5 p.m. tonight, the declaration will no longer include the towns of Bethel, Cochecton or Forestburgh, based on conversations with their supervisors.

The declaration was extended in Highland and Tusten to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2018 due to the complexity and time required to restore power and remove debris.

“NYSEG is literally rebuilding its infrastructure in these towns,” said Potosek. “According to an assessment by the National Weather Service, Tusten and Highland endured 95 MPH winds – akin to the upper limits of a Category 1 hurricane.”

There are no travel restrictions associated with this declaration, but people are again asked to use caution and refrain from unnecessary travel in the affected areas.

The County’s Emergency Operations Center released its personnel today, but the 911 Center remains fully staffed, and County officials continue to coordinate efforts to restore electricity, reopen roads, clean up debris, and distribute dry ice and water from NYSEG and Orange & Rockland Utilities.

“We will be monitoring the situation Countywide throughout the weekend,” Public Safety Commissioner Rick Sauer assured. “I remain in regular contact with town supervisors and local emergency responders to ensure a coordinated, efficient response to the challenges we’re facing.”

Dry ice and water continue to be available at the following locations, so long as supplies last:

  • Monticello Firehouse (Richardson Avenue)
  • Fallsburg Police Station (Railroad Avenue, South Fallsburg)
  • Highland Town Hall (Proctor Road, Eldred)
  • Tusten Town Hall (Bridge Street, Narrowsburg)
  • Forestburgh Firehouse (Route 42)
  • Lumberland Town Hall (Proctor Road, Glen Spey)
  • Mamakating Town Hall (Route 209, Wurtsboro)

County residents are welcome to dispose of spoiled food at no cost at County-operated transfer stations through this weekend. Stations will be open between 7:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on the following days:

  • Saturday, May 19: Monticello, Rockland, Highland and Western Sullivan
  • Sunday, May 20: Ferndale and Mamakating

Further updates will be posted on the Sullivan County website, www.co.sullivan.ny.us, and Facebook page, www.facebook.com/sullivancountygov, along with local media.
