MILFORD, PA — In a marriage of the musical arts and visual arts, Stephen Ackert will present a slideshow of paintings that inspired composers, while pianist Timur Mustakimov performs Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Robert Schumann’s Études Symphoniques on May 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Milford Theatre, 114 East Catharine St.

Pictures at an Exhibition, Mussorgsky’s enthusiastic ode to a showing of Viktor Hartmann’s architectural paintings, is among the most obvious of many pieces of music inspired by the visual arts. Robert Schumann’s 19th-century romantic works, too, were influenced by art as well as by nature. Ackert will show slides of paintings from the period that romanticized nature, including works from the Hudson River School, artists who were inspired by the Delaware River area as well as the Hudson.

Mustakimov has won multiple major awards, from the International Piano Competition in Kiev to the Concerto Competition in New York City. Ackert is a pianist himself, and the longtime head of the music department at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

Kindred Spirits Arts Programs presents this event in memory of the late Richard L. Snyder, a supporter of the arts and of the entire Milford community. The event is sponsored by the Litzenberger Family Foundation.

Tickets cost $20 at the door, $15 if bought in advance at www.kindredspiritsarts.org or at Books and Prints at Pear Alley (220 Broad St., open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., 570/296 4777). Children under 15 will be admitted free.
