HONESDALE, PA — The Friends of the Wayne County Public Library will present author, teacher and bookseller, Kelly McMasters, after a buffet luncheon at the Hotel Wayne on Tuesday, April 8 at 12 noon. McMasters will read from her acclaimed book, “Welcome to Shirley: A Memoir from an Atomic Town,” and share excerpts from her column for The Paris Review, describing her experiences as a first-time bookseller in Honesdale.

McMasters grew up in Shirley, Long Island, a small town of hard-working families with a strong sense of community. With great affection she recounts the lives of her family, her neighbors, and the enduring friendships she formed. At the same time she chronicles the environmental catastrophe caused by leaking nuclear wastes from the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

McMasters’ essays, reviews and articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post Magazine, The American Scholar, and Newsday, among other publications.

In 2012 McMasters moved from New York City to Wayne County with her two sons and husband, the painter Mark Milroy. In Honesdale, they run Moody Road Studios, a bookshop and printmaking project space, at 1023 Main St.

McMasters will have copies of her book to sign and available for sale after the luncheon and her readings. The Hotel Wayne will donate the proceeds from the luncheon to the library. Tickets cost $20, and prepaid reservations can be made until Saturday, April 5 at the Wayne County Public Library, 1406 N. Main St. Call 570/253-1220.
