Sullivan West dominates Chester Academy

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — It wasn’t much of a horserace, but both teams gave it their best shot.

On Friday night, December 9, the Lady Bulldogs of Sullivan West (1-1 overall) vied with the Lady Hambletonians of Chester Academy (0-2) in a non-league girls’ varsity game of hoops.

From the start of the matchup, the home team bucketeers announced their domination of the court as they outpaced their opponents in every frame: 14-3, 13-7, 12-8 and 6-5 on the way to a 45-23 final victory on the boards.

Sullivan West’s top scorers: McKinley Bernitt (14 points), Sabrina Martinez (13) and Josephine Martinez (8).

Chester’s top gun of the night was Hunter Seabrook, with 15 total points, including a three from outside the paint.

Stats from the free-throw line: Sullivan West 7/19; Chester 2/10.

“We’re figuring it out, we’re young,” said Pete Rickard, ninth year coach of the Lady Hambletonians.

At the beginning of the season, Chester is fielding two freshmen starters, while a couple of other first stringers are sitting on the bench with injuries.

“They’re playing hard,” added Rickard.

His take on the opposition?

“Sullivan West has a good team… they have a lot of talent [and] they passed the ball well, and they pressed us good.”

Pat Donovan is in his eighth season at the helm of the Lady Bulldogs hoopsters.

“I think we played pretty well, we executed with patience offensively… [and] worked very hard on defense,” he said.

His goals for this year?

“Sectionals is always our goal,” replied Donovan.

What about the here and now?

“To keep building with each day of practice… to get better and better each game.”

So what about the horserace?

Chester Academy’s mascot is taken from Hambletonian 10 (aka Rysdyk’s Hambletonian), a famed harness racing horse of the 19th Century, a trotter who was later immortalized at the Harness Racing Hall of Fame.
