The crest of the wave

Sullivan West’s Mitch Paciga will show his high-jumping prowess at the state meet in Middletown. He was the Section’s Division II winner with a leap of 6-3. His personal best this year is 6-4.

In baseball, Tri-Valley, the defending Class C champion, defeated number-one seeded Chester 12-6 in the semifinals before losing a heartbreaker 11-5 to Rhinebeck in the title game. It was the Hawks’ first-ever baseball crown. Rhinebeck got out to an early 8-0 lead but the Bears fought back late making it 8-5 with the tying run at the plate before coming up short. Rhinebeck tacked on insurance runs to secure the win. T-V, which began its season at 2-6, ended at 13-9. In Class D, Eldred fell to John A Coleman Catholic by the score of 7-3 in the Section IX Class D final. The Statesmen are the defending state champs.

In softball, Livingston Manor scored five runs in the seventh inning to edge Chapel Field 10-9. It was the Lady Wildcats’ fourth straight Section IX title. They won the state title in 2010 and 2011 played powerful Afton (20-1) in the opening round of the state tourney on June 4. Sullivan West fell to Spackenkill 4-0 in its May 28 Class B quarterfinal as Lady Spartan Gabi Mastrantuono pitched her second no-hitter of the season.

In boys golf, Sullivan West’s Drew Billard was tied for 68th place in the state meet at Ithaca after the opening round. Next week features a wrap up of the state track meet, boys and girls golf tourney and a final word about baseball, softball and the spring season. Also, Tri-Valley will hold its awards night on June 5, so stay tuned to see who won this year’s coveted trophies.
