SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — The winter sports season hurtles closer toward its finish and the results are becoming increasingly more dramatic. With the results of the indoor track divisional championships and the imminence of the OCIAA and Sullivan County Indoor Track Championships slated for February 10, 11 and 13, not to mention the coming Section 9 Division I and II wrestling championships at Monroe-Woodbury and Rondout Valley to be held respectively on February 11 and 12, along with the Section 9 Alpine skiing sectionals at Hunter Mountain on February 14, the coming week will evince the crowning of champions. For some elite athletes and teams, it means an invitation to continue their quest for even bigger quarry.

This coming week, a couple of basketball division titles will be on the line as Fallsburg’s boys (6-1 OCIAA) will look for a February 8 redemption against Seward (7-0 OCIAA) for an early season overtime loss and a share of the Division V title. Tri-Valley’s girls, the defending Class C champions who remain unbeaten, can move closer to the Division V title with wins over Seward and a hoped-for season sweep of mighty Tuxedo as they host the Lady Tornadoes on February 9. In a February 10 rematch of their raucous first meeting, the Sullivan West and Liberty boys will vie in Lake Huntington. The Indians won the first encounter, but had the result reversed by their use of an ineligible player. Liberty aspires to register a plea to Section 9 to be included in this year’s sectionals.

This past week, Sullivan West improved to 11-4 with its commanding 56-36 non-league win over neighboring Eldred, a team that must now win all five of its remaining games to make it to the big dance. Westie Matt Cardona led all scorers in that local clash, as he poured in 22 points and authored a spate of blocked shots. Eldred’s P.J. Collins blocked even more and scored 17 for the Yellow Jackets. Also on tap this week is the Fourth Annual Coaches Versus Cancer Basketball Classic slated for Sullivan County Community College on February 11. Eldred’s girls will face Livingston Manor in the opening salvo, followed by a jayvee boys clash between Liberty and Monticello. The varsity boys squads will then go at it, followed by a girls clash between Tri-Valley and Sullivan West. Both of those games are rematches of last year. Monticello’s boys and T-V’s girls emerged victorious in last year’s event, which raised upward of $3,200 dollars for the Catskill Regional Oncology Unit. This year, the Sullivan County Men’s and Women’s basketball teams will also stage games against the Borough of Manhattan as part of the event dedicated to the memory of Cierra Boone, a cousin of Generals’ star Dante Agnew.

In skiing, Monticello’s girls clinched the Division 1 title and Haley Heins was crowned individual champion, while the Montie boys finished second to Onteora as Panther Ryan Heins tied Onteora’s Jake Combe for the individual title. Sullivan West’s Drew Billard fractured his wrist at Belleayre Mountain on January 30 and is likely out for the remainder of the season.

In indoor track, Tri-Valley’s boys and girls were crowned Division V champions. Eldred’s boys and girls were runners up.
