SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — “The time has come, the walrus said, to speak of many things” go the famous lines from Lewis Carroll’s “Through The Looking Glass.” And, indeed, considering this past week’s panoply of league action in basketball, skiing, wrestling and indoor track, it is apparent that there is much to report about the heart of the winter sports season.

At Holiday Mountain in the first giant slalom race of the new year, Monticello’s Haley Heins came in third, Sullivan West’s Kendall Menges was fifth and Fallsburg-Tri-Valley’s Sarah Coney took seventh.

In wrestling, Eldred-Fallsburg 2-3 (2-0) propelled itself to the top spot in Division IIB with a pair of wrestling wins over two teams that vanquished them last year in their first season. E-F defeated John S. Burke Catholic 36-22 and beat Tuxedo 48-38. E-F travels to Tri-Valley on January 18 to take on the Bear and Ellenville.

In girls basketball, Tri-Valley 6-0 (4-0) turned heads with an impressive 39-32 road win over Tuxedo, propelled by 11 points from junior Mareena DiMilia. T-V is the defending Section 9 Class C champion. Tuxedo, which beat them for the title in 2010, was up in Class B a year ago. T-V went on to defeat league rival Fallsburg 64-39, led by Caroline Martin’s 16 points. Sullivan West 1-7 (1-2) lost to Burke 65-11 and then to Liberty 60-28. Eldred 4-4 (2-2) defeated Seward 29-21. Eldred will play Tri-Valley twice in the final week of the regular season. Monticello 5-3 (1-1) defeated Port Jervis 49-31, while Livingston Manor 4-4 (2-0) defeated Roscoe 1-7 (1-1).

In boys basketball, events took a bizarre turn after Liberty had beaten Sullivan West 60-38 in the first league game for both teams this season. The result was reversed and Liberty’s four wins to date were wiped off the slate after the district discovered that it had fielded an ineligible player. In a routine check of records for graduation, the unnamed player was discovered to be in his fifth year, not of varsity play but of attendance, thereby rendering him ineligible. The Liberty School District initiated the action. A subsequent 76-56 loss to James I. O’Neill consigned the Indians to a 0-8 (0-2) record. Sullivan West ended the week at 6-5 (1-1), after losing to Burke 86-23. The Bulldogs take on O’Neill on January 18. Fallsburg, 6-2 (3-1), continued its winning ways by defeating league rival Tri-Valley 61-39. Rakkir Watson led the way with 16 points.

In indoor track, current Section 9 leaders include 3200, Tri-Valley’s Jim Bernstein (10.01.54); 1500, Autumn Bender (5:11.92); shot put Mareena DiMilia (38-11.75); and 1600, Eldred’s Alex Campanella (4:21.82). Campanella ran a 4:26.84 in the mile at the Millrose Game Trials, placing 16th. That followed a fifth-place finish at the Hispanic Games at the Armory with a personal best time of 4:23.35. Tri-Valley’s Dominique Darby qualified for this year’s Millrose Games with her weight throw of 47-1. Action continues apace in all winter sports this week.
