LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — With glowing words of praise and stunning slide images depicting their moments in the sun (and rain), Sullivan West’s spring sports athletes, including a cadre of talented seniors, were honored at the school’s final sports awards presentation on June 16. High school principal Margy Tenbus congratulated the athletes, including the seniors, many of whom had participated in sports for the past six years. “Our students are the best. They are the most ambitious, athletic and academically motivated,” she said.

Athletic director David Franskevicz commended Ryan Alsdorf and Gabrielle Humleker, the two OCIAA Scholar Athlete honorees, along with the boys track team, the softball team and the girls golf team for being NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete teams for their cumulative GPAs of 90 percent or better.

Following the presentation of trophies to the two most deserving members from each team, the night’s most coveted awards were bestowed upon a select group of seniors.

The following awards capped off the night: the Coaches Award (Female), Gabrielle Humleker; Coaches Award (Male), Michael Durkin; The Milt Gaebel Awards, Jillian Fife and Ryan Alsdorf; and the Most Valuable Senior Athletes, Rianne Erlwein and Jeremy DeGori.

The highlight of the evening is the awarding of the Billy Moran Scholarship, created in memory of William “Billy” Moran of Hortonville, a student of Delaware Valley Central School and later Union College who was an outstanding athlete, scholar and citizen. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Billy’s untimely and tragic death that resulted from being the victim of a hit-and-run driver while on a spring training baseball trip in Daytona Beach Florida on April 1, 1981.

Each year, Billy’s lifelong friend Brent Rosenberger awards the scholarship, created by Billy’s family and friends, to a senior who best represents Billy’s attributes of impeccable athleticism, scholarship and citizenship. This year’s winner is Gabrielle Humleker. In addition to receiving the $2,500 dollar scholarship, Humleker’s name will be added to the plaque that lists the former recipients of the coveted honor. The plaque hangs next to a picture of Moran outside of the school gymnasium.

This writer/photographer concluded the evening with a musical slide show that chronicled the spring of 2011 and ended with a hearkening back to the fall and winter that preceded it.

Details about the award winners and their heroic exploits can be found at sportsinsightsny.com in the piece entitled, “The Sun Sets In the West.”
