Judgment days

Eldred’s Hunter Proscia continued his storied spring in the steeplechase with a third-place finish at the OCIAA Championships.

In golf, Fallsburg’s Rich Elliott won the OCIAA Championship played in a monsoon at the Swan Lake Golf and Country Club with a three over par 75. Elliott was a state qualifier last year. The OCIAA match is the qualifier for the Section 9 tournament, which began at the Villa Roma on May 23. Also qualifying for the Section 9 tourney were Monticello’s Angelo Niforatos, Sullivan West’s Drew Billard, Tri-Valley’s Jimmy Bernstein and Fallsburg’s Mike Scuderi.

In baseball action, Sullivan West clinched a spot in the Class B sectionals with a 13-3 win over Liberty on May 19 that pushed the Dawgs’ overall record above .500 for the season. Other teams heading to sectionals will be Tri-Valley in Class C and Livingston Manor in Class D. Monticello played Wallkill on May 24 and a win there would put the Monties in the Class A sectionals. The Section 9 baseball tourney was pushed back a week because of the volume of postponed games.

In softball, Livingston Manor, the only Class D team to qualify for sectionals, will likely get a bye right to the state semifinals. Sullivan West is still in contention for a Class B sectional berth but will need two more league wins to get there. They still have games to play against Burke, O’Neill and Liberty.
