SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Despite predictions to the contrary, the world did not end on May 21, though the end of school days is not far off. For area athletes, judgment days are at hand as the vying for championships, individual and team milestones are well underway. Here is the skinny on this past week’s travails.

Track and field: The Sullivan County Meet of Champions, renamed the Donna Deppa Memorial Meet, took place on May 18 amid a downpour that shortened the affair. Girls winners: 100, Jessica Dunnigan (Liberty), 12.9; 200, Jayco Krebs (L), 29.8; 400, Rosa Martinez (SW), 67.5; 800, Rianne Erlwein (SW), 2:38; 1,500, Erica Concors (Monticello), 5:40; 3,000, Dani Myers (SW), 11:11.4; 100 hurdles, Rebeccah Harman (L), 16.5; high jump, Kristina Sumfleth (SW), 4-6; long jump, Hannah Feinman (SW), 14-1.5; triple jump, Harman (L), 31-4.75; shot put, Dominique Darby (Tri-Valley), 33-7.5; discus, Brittany Roa (SW), 67-3; pole vault, Vicky Tingley (TV), 6-0. Boys winners: 100, Otto Banghart (Eldred), 11.4; 200, Tino Taylor (M), 23.6; 400, Matt Rodriguez (M), 54.0; 800, Alex Campanella (E), 2:08; 1,600, Hunter Proscia (E), 4:51.2; 3,200, Eric Haberli (SW), 11:10.9; 110, hurdles, Adrian Krzystzofowicz (E), 16.3; high jump, Austin Colon (M), 5-6; long jump, Mistah Alli (M), 18-6.5; triple jump, Alli (M), 37-9.5; shot put, Brian Edwards (TV), 48-1.75; discus, Edwards (TV), 132-10; pole vault, Sean Mack (Livingston Manor), 7-0. Relays and steeplechase were not run because of wet conditions.

At the OCIAA track championships on May 20-21, Liberty’s Jessica Dunnigan won the 100 (12.51) and the 200 (25.51). Tri-Valley’s Dominique Darby won the shot put (34-5.75). Chris Lockwood (L) won the javelin (140-9). Brian Edwards (TV) won the discus (141-5) and took second in the shot put (45-7.5). SW’s Todd Roeder was second in the discus (138-3), while teammate Brandon Wagner was fourth (125). Eldred’s Hunter Proscia was third in the 3000 steeplechase (9:54.24). Tri-Valley’s boys were ninth overall in the meet. Sullivan West finished 10th among the 16 schools that range from Class D to Class AA. Tri-Valley’s girls were sixth overall. Liberty was ninth and Eldred was 12th. The Section 9 track championships are this week. Eldred’s boys and girls will look to defend their Class D titles, while Tri-Valley’s girls seek to defend their Class C crown.

In golf, Fallsburg’s Rich Elliott won the OCIAA Championship played in a monsoon at the Swan Lake Golf and Country Club with a three over par 75. Elliott was a state qualifier last year. The OCIAA match is the qualifier for the Section 9 tournament, which began at the Villa Roma on May 23. Also qualifying for the Section 9 tourney were Monticello’s Angelo Niforatos, Sullivan West’s Drew Billard, Tri-Valley’s Jimmy Bernstein and Fallsburg’s Mike Scuderi.

In baseball action, Sullivan West clinched a spot in the Class B sectionals with a 13-3 win over Liberty on May 19 that pushed the Dawgs’ overall record above .500 for the season. Other teams heading to sectionals will be Tri-Valley in Class C and Livingston Manor in Class D. Monticello played Wallkill on May 24 and a win there would put the Monties in the Class A sectionals. The Section 9 baseball tourney was pushed back a week because of the volume of postponed games.

In softball, Livingston Manor, the only Class D team to qualify for sectionals, will likely get a bye right to the state semifinals. Sullivan West is still in contention for a Class B sectional berth but will need two more league wins to get there. They still have games to play against Burke, O’Neill and Liberty.
