Winter epilogue

The Lady Bears are led by Jakki Pugh’s 17 points.

Last week, Monticello was eliminated in a brutal 80-75 overtime semifinal loss to Cornwall. Leading by four with just over a minute left in regulation, Monticello was victimized by a pair of threes from Cornwall sophomore Zach Bouton that sandwiched a bucket by Kenny Sanders Jr. that had tied the game at 64 all. Juan Peña’s desperation three at the buzzer rimmed out. Monticello reduced a seven-point OT deficit to one with 14.5 seconds but a floor-length inbounds pass and a Cornwall layup ended the season for the senior-laden fifth-seeded Monties, who exited at 12-8. Cornwall lost to Red Hook in the Class A finals.

County kids excel at indoor track states: At the state indoor track championships staged at Cornell University on March 5, Liberty’s Jessica Dunnigan was 11th in the long jump (17-0.75) and 13th in the 55 (7.42). Sullivan West’s Rachel Deppa was 10th in the 1500 racewalk (7:45.21). Monticello’s Shane Jackson was 9th in the 300 (36.14) and 20th in the 55 (6.6.) Eldred’s Hunter Proscia ran in the 11th place intersectional relay that finished with a time of 9:15.27.

Alpine skiing championship results: Drew Billard (SW) was 40th overall in 2:01.53. Ryan Heins (Mont) was 51st in 2:11.11. Haley Ripa (Mont) was 36th, in 2:09.39.
