SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — For a couple of area teams and individual athletes, this past week proved that there is indeed gold at the end of the rainbow. At the Sullivan County Indoor Track Championships held at Sullivan County Community College on February 13, Tri-Valley won both the girls and boys crowns. The Lady Bears outpointed Sullivan West 137-66 to defend their title from a year ago. The T-V boys bested second-place Liberty 103-76 to unseat defending champion Ellenville.

At the Section 9 Indoor Track “B” Championships held at West Point on February 17, the Tri-Valley girls won their third consecutive sectional crown. They outpointed second-place Onteora 144-68. Eldred (64) was third among the girls, while Sullivan West (44) was fifth and Liberty (42) was sixth. Ellenville won its fifth consecutive section crown by outpointing second-place Tri-Valley 109-66. Eldred (57) was fourth, Liberty (42) was sixth and Sullivan West (14) was ninth. Local girls individual winners were as follows: 600, Brittany Rennison (TV); 1,000, Christine Donnelly (Eld), 3:08.10; 1,500, Donnelly (Eld), 5:08.37; 1,500 racewalk, Rachel Deppa (SW), 8:03.21; 1,600 relay, Eldred (Christine Donnelly, Sarah Malzahn, Savanna Finck, Selena Hudak), 4:26.46; 3,200 relay; Tri-Valley (Autumn Bender, Alex Brooks, Brooke Gillette, Danielle Graham), 11:05.23; High jump; Katlynn Greffrath (TV), 4-8; Long jump, Greffrath (TV), 15-7; Triple jump, Rebeccah Harman (Lib), 31-7; Shot put, Dominique Darby (TV), 35-1; Pole vault, Breanna Brucher (Eld), 10-6; Weight throw (non-scoring), 1. In the Section 9 Alpine Ski Championships held at Hunter Mountain on February 14, the Monticello girls defeated Warwick to win the Section 9 team title to go along with the Division One crown they’d already secured. Monticello cousins Ryan and Haley Heins were the individual winners. Haley Ripa was fifth and Sullivan West’s Kendall Menges was ninth. Sullivan West’s Drew Billard finished fifth among the boys while skiing with his fractured wrist in a cast. Fallsburg/Tri-Valley’s Ryan Erts was ninth. The aforementioned skiers will be heading to states in Lake Placid on February 27-28.
At the OCIAA Cheerleading Competition, Tri-Valley took third place in Division II. The Lady Bears were not at the event a year ago. Fallsburg and Monticello also competed among the field of 16 schools. Pine Bush won Division I for the fifth straight year. They recently finished 13th at Nationals. Burke won Division II.
In boys basketball, Monticello clinched a playoff berth with a dramatic 49-46 win over Goshen on the Monties’ senior night. Rob Riley secured the Monties’ win with crucial free throws in the waning seconds. The same night, Liberty boys helped to make their case for a sectional berth with a 46-45 win over O’Neill as Ryan Henry scored the game-winning lay up.
