LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Meet herbalist author Dina Falconi and botanical illustrator Wendy Hollender for a behind-the-scenes slide presentation on the making of “Foraging & Feasting: A Field Guide and Wild Food Cookbook” at Morgan Outdoors, 46 Main St., on Saturday, November 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. The event also includes a book signing, botanical print exhibition by Hollender, and wild and edible hors d’oeuvres, courtesy of Slow Food UpDeRiVa.
The book features artistic, instructive botanical illustrations and recipes. Falconi and Hollender share a long commitment to connecting with nature through food and art. Their effort weaves together Falconi’s 30 years of investigations into wild-plant identification, foraging and cooking with Hollender’s deft artistic skills, honed over 15 years as a botanical illustrator. For the past three years they have been writing, drawing, designing and testing the recipes for this book. They launched a highly successful campaign on Kickstarter to raise funds to publish it in March of 2013.
Falconi is a clinical herbalist with over 20 years teaching experience in the use of herbs for food, medicine and pleasure. She is a founding member of the Northeast Herbal Association, a chapter leader of the Weston A. Price Foundation, and on the board of Slow Food-Hudson Valley. An avid gardener and wildcrafter, Falconi also completed the Permaculture Design Certificate Course.
Hollender is a botanical artist, author and instructor. Hollender’s illustrations have been published in The New York Times; O, The Oprah Magazine; Real Simple and The Observer (UK). Her work was included in the 13th International Exhibition at Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, and in exhibitions at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew in the U.K., and the Smithsonian National Museum for Natural History.
