Christian F. Ropke, of Narrowsburg, NY, a lifelong resident, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at home with his family by his side. He was 90.
The son of the late Oscar and Emily Metzger Ropke, he was born in Lava, NY on August 12, 1923. He was married for 65 years to Stella Schwartz Ropke, who survives.
Christian was a WWII Navy Veteran. He was retired from Narrowsburg Lumber Company. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Narrowsburg. He was a member and past chief of Narrowsburg Fire Dept. He was a Sullivan Co. Fire Commissioner. He was a Board Member of Town of Tusten. He was a member of Tusten Vol. Ambulance Corp. He was a Little League Coach and Cub Scout Leader. He was an active member in designing and building the basement in the Tusten Library. He was a member of many bowling leagues. A family statement reads: “Chris was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoors person. He especially liked ice fishing. He was great at measurements and numbers (all the way till the end of his life.) He will truly be missed.”
Survivors include his wife Stella; two sons, Scott Ropke and his wife Pam of Narrowsburg, Tom Ropke and his wife Carol of Floral Park, LI; four grandchildren, Scott Ropke Jr and his wife Candace, Jacquelyn Engvaldsen, Michael Ropke and Christine Ropke; great grand children, Brandon Ropke, Alex and Ashlyn Engvaldsen, sister Lydia (Rena) Bashoor of Maryland; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is predeceased by his daughter, Claudia Jean; sisters, Margaret and Edna; and brothers, Herman, Oscar and Charles.
Friends are invited to call on Friday, December. 6, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m., 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday 9 to 9:30 a.m. at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 90 Main St. Narrowsburg, NY 12764.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Narrowsburg, NY. Burial will be in Indian Orchard Cemetery, Honesdale, PA.
