April 10, 2013 —
The task of an advisory committee was discussed at the Town of Callicoon town meeting on April 8, in Jeffersonville. Supervisor Tom Bose said the committee will be charged with advising the town board about whether it should change, delete or let stand language in the proposed comprehensive plan that suggests gas drilling may be part of the future of the town.
The language regarding gas drilling has been a source of controversy in the town, and in a rare move the comprehensive plan was rejected by the Sullivan County Department of Planning over the issue of gas drilling. The town could choose to move forward with the plan anyway with a supermajority vote, but has not done so at this point.
It’s not clear who will be appointed to the committee, or even if the committee will actually be formed, because at the meeting several people suggested it was the responsibility of the board members to make the decision about the gas drilling language.
