MONTICELLO, NY — The Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless in Monticello, which has been providing meals to residents since 1988, will cease operations at the end of July. Steve White, the director, said the organization was denied a new round of funding from the NYS Department of Health.
The organization had been receiving about $120,000 a year through the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program, and without that funding White said his organization can’t afford to deliver the food.
Last year, the federation delivered 40,000 hot meals at the building that houses the organization, and 130,000 individual pantry meals that clients take home for weekend eating. White said, “There are other pantries in the area, and I feel good that they will pick up the slack. I know that they’re going to make a big effort.”
