The Town of Lumberland Town Board began discussing the need to address noise levels at its monthly meeting on March 14. The move came in response to a letter of complaint filed by the Loch Ada Taxpayers Association (LATA) as well as the first permit request of the upcoming camp season, which seeks a “noise permit” allowing sound to be generated until 11:30 p.m. on most weekends through the summer, as well as some weekdays.
In an effort to uphold the rights of all residents, the board is considering shortening the hours and limiting the days when noise can be generated. Both the LATA and the town board noted that they enjoy the sounds of children playing, but not the “amplified sound” that has become increasingly prevalent with the use of loudspeakers for announcements, music and other activities. Current town regulations do not allow amplified sound, according to town supervisor Nadia Rajsz.
In other matters, it was announced that another public hearing has been set for the zoning rewrite process on April 9 at 7:15 p.m. in the town hall in Glen Spey. The next monthly meeting is scheduled for April 11 at 7 p.m.
Ann Stiemle of the Lumberland Fire Department announced that 42 calls have been responded to already this year, including one earlier that day in which a cabin burned down. Stiemle reminded residents to call 911 immediately whenever a fire erupts. She also offered to obtain a cardiac defibrillator unit to be stored in the town hall, and to provide the training on its use. The board enthusiastically accepted the offer.
