On Monday June 6, 2011, at about 9:30 PM, a deputy with the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office was on patrol, en route to his post, when he spotted a white Honda Civic on Raceway Road fishtail as it turned onto Jefferson Street near the Beanbag ice cream stand in Monticello.
The deputy followed the vehicle onto State Route 17 eastbound where he activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle.
The driver of the Civic failed to comply and accelerated, reaching speeds of in excess of 100 miles per hour. The deputy called for assistance over the radio as the Honda exited at exit 105 B onto State Route 42 heading towards Fallsburg.
The deputy called for assistance over the radio as the Honda exited at exit 105 B onto State Route 42 heading towards Fallsburg. The Honda Civic then turned onto Concord Road where the driver lost control and struck several trees.
The driver, Daniel Burgos 26, of Liberty was taken into custody. Neither he or his passenger, Laura Riddick of Ferndale were injured.
Units from the state police and Fallsburg Police assisted. Burgos was charged with the Felonies of Reckless Endangerment 1st degree, Aggravated Unlicensed 1st degree, DWI, and assorted Vehicle and Traffic violations. Daniel Burgos was arraigned before Town of Thompson Justice Martin Miller and sent to the Sullivan County Jail without bail pending further court action.
This is the second time Burgos has been arrested for leading police on a high-speed chase. In 2009, he was sentenced to two to four years in prison for leading police on a chase and crashing into two patrol cars that had boxed him in.
