The latest market report that the American Wind Energy Association has released shows a sharp contrast between the small amount of wind power that was built in 2013 (1,084 megawatts) and the record-breaking amount of wind power that is under construction this year (12,000+ megawatts).
The difference lies in policy certainty. When the future of the production tax credit (PTC) and investment tax credit (ITC) was unclear during 2012, business came to a halt, and thus there was little development the following year. Once the PTC and ITC were extended at the beginning of 2013, development picked up, spurring all of the construction that we’re seeing this year.
The PTC and ITC have expired again, and we must urge our political leaders to act to extend them immediately, so that we can avoid another downturn in the wind energy industry.
More American wind power means cleaner power, and thus cleaner air for our kids; a more diverse, secure electricity portfolio for our country; and high quality jobs in an industry that we can be proud of.
If you believe that wind power is very important to this country, then I ask you to demand that members of Congress work with their colleagues to extend the policies that help drive this green industry forward.
