We believe in technology and we accept its dark shadow. New technology may lead to new jobs and greater wealth for some. Technology can also lead to unintended human sacrifice.
Our current weapons technology enabled a suicidal 20-year-old to efficiently kill 20 six-year-old-school children before murdering himself. This is unacceptable. We must improve our detection and treatment of all homicidal/suicidal people in our country. Most mentally ill people pose no danger to others. This may be difficult to believe because of what has recently happened and because our entertainment industry often misrepresents mentally ill people to provide dramatic and fear-producing effects. These misrepresentations stigmatize mental illness, and most importantly contribute to people avoiding mental health treatment when they need it.
Should we continue business as usual? Our past unreflective acceptance of weapons technology has led to horrific unintended consequences. Should we stop creating such weapons? Should we increase our regulations of them? Should we ban them? Or should we just be willing to periodically sacrifice children’s lives? Should we continue to accept this technology’s dark shadow? No we should not.
