HONESDALE, PA — Wayne County’s historic Old Stone Jail will be open to the public for tours on Saturday, September 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The Old Stone Jail is located between the courthouse and 10th streets.
Built in 1859, the jail was used until 1935. The squat, one-story structure is constructed almost completely of rough stone, including the interior walls and the floor. A heavy iron door will greet visitors, and inside they will see five dungeon-like cells, each measuring about 12 feet by nine or 10 feet.
Learn about historic jail breaks, and about Wayne County’s last hanging.
