Garden and kickball game open to community

BEACH LAKE, PA — Beach Lake United Methodist Church will host a family-friendly community event including a kickball game, a free potluck supper and an open house at the Beach Lake Community garden on Saturday, June 20. Activities begin at 4 p.m. with the potluck to follow. (In case of rain, game day will be inside the church.)

Anyone interested in learning about organic gardening or in participating in the garden is invited to the open house. Full- to quarter-size plots are available, or smaller planting boxes for those wanting to try out gardening on a smaller scale.

For the past eight years, area gardeners, novices and Master Gardeners, have planted and shared harvests with many, including local food pantries. This year, work is under way for the garden to earn Penn State Master Gardeners’ Pollinator Friendly Certification. With the declining bee population, this area will provide special food and a habitat for native insects and pollinators in need of assistance.

Both the garden and adjacent playground contribute to making the church an active site for many families in the area. The church is located at 7 Milanville Rd., next to the Beach Lake post office. For information, call 570/729-7011.
