Transition Community garden welcomes new growers

HONESDALE, PA — The Transition Community Garden at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center is seeking both experienced and beginning gardeners who want to grow their own vegetables this summer. Up to a dozen garden plots are available for the upcoming growing season. Apartment dwellers and others who do not have a place to grow a vegetable garden are especially invited, but all are welcome to apply. There is a nominal fee for joining this garden, which was launched as a community project five years ago in partnership with Ellen Memorial. This year the organization SEEDS (Sustainable Energy Education and Development Support; www.seedsgroup.net) also has become a sponsoring partner.

The raised-bed plots come in two sizes: four-by-eight feet or four-by-16 feet. Fees are set on a sliding scale based on a person’s ability to pay. Water and basic gardening tools are supplied. Plots will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis and fill up quickly. Additionally, volunteers are being sought who would like to tend a plot (or plots) for the local area’s food pantries. Galilee garden seeks gardeners

GALILEE, PA — The Galilee Community Garden opens Memorial Day Weekend for its second growing season for any who wish to garden organically. Ten-by-ten-foot plots are currently available and can be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis by calling 570/224-4178. The garden is on the grounds of the Unity Grange at 544 Galilee Rd. in Damascus. Both experienced and beginning gardeners are invited to apply.

Gardeners are asked to agree to practice organic gardening methods and not use chemicals on their plots. A vegetable plant exchange will be held on Saturday, May 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the garden. The Galilee Community Garden is sponsored by the PEARL Center for Rural Ministry, an outreach of the Damascus Area United Methodist Churches, in partnership with the Galilee Grange and many other community partners. A large area is set aside to grow vegetables for the township food pantry and volunteers are welcome.
