Walk across Pennsylvania: It’s a virtual thing!

March 19, 2014

PENNSYLVANIA — Penn State Cooperative Extension (PSCE) is inviting all Pennsylvanians to take a virtual walk all the way across the Commonwealth on Route 6 (394 miles) from Erie County to Pike County. Karen Bracey of PSCE in Tunkhannock recently explained this project, called Everybody Walk Across PA.

Five people form a team, with each team pledging to walk 50 miles a week, and over a period of eight weeks, the team will have walked 400 miles. Each team’s actual miles will be logged on a chart that will show how far the team has walked, and this will be posted on Walking begins on March 31 and continues through May 25. Participants can register at

Last year, Pike County assembled 10 teams of walkers under the banner “Drop Everything and Walk,” according to Gloria Derflinger, who at 78 has been participating in the walking program for 10 years. This year, Derflinger is walking with four other people. “We all know each other, but we don’t have to meet to walk,” she explained. “I’m in Lords Valley, another member is in Bethlehem, one’s in Hemlock Farms, and another is in Bushkill.”

Knowing you’re walking with a team “gives you the motivation to do it,” Derflinger said, adding, that in the past she has done “a little more than I thought I would do… because I want to stick with the team.”

On Sunday nights or Monday mornings, members of Derflinger’s team call their team leader to report in, and the leader records the team’s mileage online.
