PARKSVILLE, NY — The public is invited to a Maple Weekend Tour at the Justus Asthalter Sap House followed by a short hike or snowshoe, depending on conditions, along the Parksville O & W Rail Trail on Sunday, March 23 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Meet at the Justus Asthalter Maple Sugar Farm at 1:30 p.m., located at 865 Aden Rd., to witness tree tapping and sap boiling at a fourth-generation Sullivan County sugaring operation.

Then explore a 1.3-mile segment of the Parksville Rail Trail along the Little Beaverkill. The Parksville Rail Trail is just off Route 17, at exit 98. Parking is in the new municipal lot next to the historic Parksville Church and across from the Mobil station, at the corner of Parksville Road and Short Avenue.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., the hike begins one block away, in front of the old Mr. Willy’s on Main Street, where the trailhead is located. There will be two groups, the jack rabbits and the tortoises, so participants can pick the pace that fits them.

Afterwards, everyone is invited to warm up at nearby Rolling River Café, a block from the trailhead. Hot and cold beverages and tapas are available.

Reservations are required by Sunday, March 23 at 11 a.m. Call Lisa at 845/439 5507 or email info@morgan-outdoors.com. An update on trail conditions will be available too.

If trail conditions call for snowshoes, rentals for this event are $5. To reserve a pair or for driving directions, call Morgan Outdoors at 845/439 5507.

The event is sponsored by Trailkeeper.org, with staff from Trailkeeper partners Lisa Lyons of Morgan Outdoors and Erin Burch of Catskill Mountainkeeper. TrailKeeper.org is a partnership of local organizations, businesses, and agencies to promote the public trails and natural beauty of Sullivan County, NY including Delaware Highlands Conservancy, Catskill Mountainkeeper, the Sullivan County Division of Planning and Environmental Management, the Sullivan County Visitors Association, and Morgan Outdoors.
