DINGMAN’S FERRY, PA — As the ground warms, periodical cicadas that have spent the last 17 years underground will emerge and take to the skies. On Saturday, June 1, the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) will hold a program focusing on these insects. The class will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and the cost is $5 per person.

There will be different educational stations explaining the life-cycle of the cicada, how they survive years underground, and what adaptations make them so unique. Make a cicada craft, learn about these insects, and see how many you can catch. Periodical cicadas do not bite or sting, and this brood only emerges once every 17 years.

Other programs at PEEC the first weekend of June will include Volunteer Day – National Trails Day, June 1 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon; Family Fishing on June 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon; and EcoZone Exploration & Discovery Room on June 2 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Registration is requested for all programs. Call 570/828-2319 or email peec@peec.org. Visit www.peec.org.
