Cross-country skiing across the region

REGION — With a white winter upon us, the season is affording cross-country skiers ample time out on the snow. For beginners and advanced skiers alike, there are many guided cross-country skiing excursions that are offered in our area.

Catskill Nordic Ski Club: The club offers informal guided cross-country ski trips on some of Sullivan County’s most beautiful trails. Most of the trips are free, except where noted, and last about two hours. All ski trips are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday, unless otherwise indicated. Depending on the weather and/or snow conditions, the leader may choose to reschedule to Sunday or change the hour or location or to hold a winter hike. Leaders will be prepared to help and encourage new members. Members and new skiers are reminded to always call the leader the night before the scheduled ski trip for updated information. The next trip is on February 2 at the Smallwood Trails with leaders Jonathan Hyman and Gail Rubenfeld, 845/583-4103.

Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC): Located in Dingmans Ferry, PA, PEEC offers beginner ski lessons to enjoy the winter woods. Cross-country skiing is offered Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m., and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. Skis and boots are provided. The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children. Visit www.peec.org or call 570/828-2319.

Basha Kill Area: Take Your Valentine Cross-Country Skiing with Mike Medley is on Sunday, February 10 at 10 a.m. and lasts about three hours. The flat terrain on the D&H Canal towpath is great for beginners and intermediates. The path offers beautiful vistas. Dress in layers and bring water. The trail is on Haven Road, just off Route 209 south of Wurtsboro, NY. Call Medley for registration, directions or to check snow conditions at 845/754-0743. The excursion is sponsored by the Basha Kill Area Association. Visit www.thebashakill.org.
