REGION — The Northeast PA Audubon Society is looking for volunteers to join in the Christmas Bird Count, which counts birds within a 7.5-mile radius of White Mills (about 25 min. from Promised Land State Park). Part of an international effort, the event will take place on Saturday, December 17, from dawn till count is finished.

This year will be especially challenging since many of our local feederwatchers have reported a noticeable decline in birds. Could this be a result of the early hurricane season that brought Irene and Lee to our region? We know that natural events can wreak havoc on wildlife, and perhaps those affects are what we are observing in our region. This year’s bird count should help us gather information that may help answer that question.

“Volunteers can give as little or as much time as they want to the effort,” says Barbara Leo, the count coordinator. “You can simply sit and count birds at feeders, or you can partner with an experienced birder. One does not need to be an expert to participate.” Participants don’t need to be experienced, just enthusiastic about birds, happy being outdoors and willing to brave whatever Mother Nature has in store on that day.

The survey provides critical data to scientists who study long-term trends in bird populations. In our previous counts, participants have spotted many species including red-winged crossbills, many ducks and waterfowl and evening grosbeaks.

Call Leo for more information at 570/253-2364.
