Peter “Pete” Toscano

Published on December 12, 2012

Peter “Pete” Toscano, longtime resident of Lake Huntington, NY passed away Thursday, December 6, 2012 at home with his family by his side. He was 82.

The son of the late Frank Toscano and Nardina Lella Toscano, he was born August 23, 1930 in New York City. He was married to Anita Toscano for 49 years. Pete served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War and was a member of the Catskill Detachment Marine Corps League and the Knights of Columbus.

A family statement reads:

“If over the past 20 years you have lived or travelled within a 50-mile radius of Lake Huntington, NY, it’s likely that in a parking lot, around a gas station, or at a public event, you encountered a short gray-haired man with an impish grin who ran up to you holding out a loaf of bread, a box of doughnuts, or a package of English muffins. That man would be Pete Toscano, the long time co-owner of Pete’s Pub, a popular Sullivan County restaurant that he ran for over 30 years with his wife, Anita. A man of endless energy, mirth and generosity, he stashed a large supply of baked goods in his car trunk that he regularly shared with friends and strangers alike.

If anyone in Western Sullivan County needed any hard-to-find item—no matter how strange—they first asked Pete, who after rummaging around in his garage or basement, either found the desired object or else fashioned one himself out of a scrap of wood, bits of wire and a splash of paint. Over the years, Pete Toscano attended hundreds of wakes and funerals for his friends, his customers and their loved ones.”

When his wife, Anita, became ill with lung cancer, he learned a whole new set of household skills and took on the task of caring for her until she died at home in September of 2006 with Pete and their three children at her side. This October, Pete was also diagnosed with lung cancer, and early Thursday morning, with his three children caring for him in his home, Pete Toscano passed away. He leaves behind many family and friends who love him dearly and will never forget his warmth, his outrageously funny stories, his unique charm and, of course, the baked goods.

He is survived by his daughter Nardina Nash and her husband Brian of Corcoran, MN; his daughter Maria Forlenza and her husband Pat of Fosterdale, NY; his son Peterson Toscano and his husband Glen Retief of Sunbury, PA; a Spanish exchange student whom Pete considered a son, Manuel Amor Machos, now a resident of Houston, TX, and his wife Teresa; his brother Joseph Toscano and his wife Francis of Toms River, NJ; his brother Louis Toscano of Narrowsburg, NY; his brother Frank Toscano of Greenville, TN; six grandchildren: Heather, Kristen, Julie and Melanie Nash, and Gregory and Geoffrey Sheppard; and several nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial was held Monday, December 10, 2012 at Our Lady of the Lake, R.C. Church, Lake Huntington, NY. Christian burial followed in St. Francis Cemetery, Narrowsburg, NY. Rev. William Scully, OFM officiated.
