Dr. Mary M. Reda of Staten Island, NY passed on Saturday, August 3, 2013. She was 42.

Born in Elizabeth, NJ to Peter and Marian Reda, she was a dedicated English professor at City College of New York at Staten Island. Mary was a member Phi Beta Kappa at Boston College. She received a Master’s degree on a teaching fellowship from Boston College as well as a PhD from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She wrote numerous articles, which were published in various academic journals, and authored a book “Between Speaking and Silence: A Study of the Quiet Student.” As a tenured, associate professor, Dr. Reda served as department chair as well as director of the writing program. Mary was often requested to speak at academic conferences in the United States as well as internationally. She served on numerous appointment search committees and was a tireless advocate for the adjunct faculty.

Mary is survived by her mother, Marian Reda; sister Dr. Ann Reda and friend Dr. Barry Jacobs; her brothers John and his wife Maureen, Joseph and his wife Lisa and Michael and his wife Michele; as well as 11 nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father, Peter Robert (Bob) Reda.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Spirit Church, Pequannock, NJ. Interment will follow at the St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory can be made to a scholarship fund being set up by her family.
