John E. Rooney

John E. Rooney, 89, of Yulan, NY, a retired Sullivan Co. DPW worker, and longtime resident of the area, died Friday, June 20, 2014 at Achieve Rehab and Nursing Fac., Liberty, NY. The son of the late Robert and Anna Murphy Rooney, he was born August 8, 1924 in New York City.

John was a WWII veteran; he served in the U.S. Army. He served tours in the European Theater and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua RC Church, Yulan, NY. He was a former member and president of the local union. He was a member of the Tusten Highland Lumberland VFW Post 6427 and Sylvan Liebla American Legion Post 1633.

Beloved brother of Helen Pitula and Frances Mattimore, beloved uncle of George and Jack Pitula and Christine Mattimore and several grandnieces and grand nephews. He is predeceased by his niece Michelle Mattimore.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at St. Anthony of Padua R.C Church, Yulan, NY. The Rev. Michael Jones officiated. Interment followed in St. Anthony Cemetery, Eldred, NY.
