Edward W. Kraus, a lifelong area resident, passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2012. He was 98.

He was born in Narrowsburg, NY on December 18, 1913 to the late Anthony and Elizabeth Korn Kraus.

Edward attended school in a one room school in Lava, NY. He grew up on his father’s farm and boarding house in Narrowsburg. The farm was also a training camp for many well known boxers of that day. Ed was quite busy working on the farm and serving as a sparring partner with many well known boxers including Gene Tunney, heavyweight champ of the world, who was at the farm in 1927. Ed served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. His career included operating a poultry farm, working for Rudy Reers Gas Service, driving a school bus for many years for Narrowsburg Central School and was also as superintendent of highways for the Town of Tusten. He also served on the Tusten Town Board as a councilman. Ed was instrumental in bringing cable television to Narrowsburg when he partnered with Dr. John Stirna and Josephine Gerrity on that venture. It was called NCTV. In later years, he mowed many lawns in the area and was seen by many faithfully caring for the Glen Cove Cemetery. He also plowed snow. He was preceded in death by his first wife Rita Kraus, son James Kraus, brothers Joseph Kraus, Charles Kraus and his sister Catherine Downey.

He is survived by his second wife of many years, Dorothy Kraus, his son Michael Kraus and his wife Monica of Ft. Myers, FL, grandchildren Rita Kraus and great grandchildren Kathlin and Jasmine, Michael and the late Misty Kraus and great grandchildren Michael and Destiny, Charles and Amanda Kraus, and Lora and James Farrell, all of Ft. Myers; his son Edward Kraus and his wife Doreen of Narrowsburg, granddaughters Cindy Odell and her husband Chip and great grandchildren Brittany and Lauren of Bethany, PA; Susan Jones and her husband Harold of Binghamton, NY and great grandchildren Harold, Morgan and Megann, grandson Douglas Kraus of Wyoming, Dot’s daughters Diane Cortese Daly, grandchildren Mike Daly and his wife Tisha, great granddaughter Mia, and daughter Debbie Cortese, granddaughters Erin Inglis and Jenna Samuel, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier R.C. Church, Narrowsburg, NY. Rev. William Scully O.F.M. will officiate.

Burial of his cremains will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Narrowsburg, NY.
