James Lester Herring

James Lester Herring, of Beach Lake, PA, a longtime resident of the area, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Kaplan Family Hospice, Newburgh, NY. He was preceded in death on October 7, 2015 by his loving wife, Eleanor Mary Kurzhals Herring. They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage on November 18, 2015.

The son of the late James Edward and Ellen Mary Clark Herring, he was born in Cooperstown, NY on April 4, 1919. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in WWII and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a life member of the U.S. Army 24th Divisions Association. He was a former employee of Kurzhals Brothers Hardware Store and manager of the Montgomery Ward Catalog Store, both in Peekskill, NY. He was a former member of the Cortland Hook and Ladder Fire Company for 25 years, Tusten Senior Citizens of Narrowsburg, NY, and Senior Roundup Club of Beach Lake, PA. He was an avid golfer and hunter and a skilled craftsman at woodworking.

He is survived by his daughter, Pamela S. Herring Lass and her husband, Wm. Terry of Port Jervis, NY; two sons, Clifford J. Herring and his wife, Cheryl of Hudson, FL, and Bruce D. Herring and his wife, Arlene of Smithville, MO; four grandchildren, Clifford J. Herring Jr. and his wife, Amanda; Lisa Herring; Mary Lass Eberling; and William J. Lass; five great-grandchildren, Wyatt Herring; Julia Lambe; Olivia Phillips; Ava Eberling; Robert Eberling; and Amanda Schmidt; and two great-great grandchildren.

There will be no visitation or memorial services. Burial will be held at Indiantown Gap Veterans Cemetery at a future date where he will be interred with his wife.
