Romaine B. Petena, formerly of Beach Lake, PA, died Friday, December 2, 2011 at Julia Ribaudo Nursing Home in Lake Ariel, PA where she resided since 2007. She was 85.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward J. Petena on August 7, 1995.

Born April 13, 1926 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Beatrice McNally McCarthy. In 1946, she became Miss New York in a beauty contest, representing the state in parades and other events. Later she worked at W.T. Grants Co. in Honesdale for 25 years and retired from Fashion Bug in Honesdale where she was known for her beautiful red hair.

She was a former member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Beach Lake. Romaine was a loving and caring mother and grandmother who put others before herself.

She is survived by daughters Joanne Tyler and husband Randy of Honesdale, PA and Shirley Wood and husband Keith of Beach Lake; brother Edward McCarthy of New York City; sister Shirley McKee of Leonia, NJ; grandchildren Kimberly Wood Justice, Colleen Boshman Ceric and Shawn Wood; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She is also preceded in death by son Richard Petena; brothers Louis Jr. and Robert McCarthy; and sister Barbara Case.

Her funeral was held from Hessling Funeral Home, Honesdale, on Tuesday, December 6 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas More Church in Lake Ariel. Interment followed in Indian Orchard Cemetery, Honesdale.
