Milda Sebris of Milanville, PA passed away on November 18, 2011 at Ellen Memorial Nursing Home, Honesdale, PA. She was 100.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Janis; daughter Ilze Ruta; and son Janis Ewald.

Milda, a native of Latvia, experienced considerable sorrow during her long life, losing both of her children within months of one another and her husband within a year of moving to their “paradise” in Damascus Township. Yet she consistently overcame those struggles with a sense of joy.

In 1953, the family visited and later relocated to Bush’s Glen (renamed Paradise Glen) and the Schoolhouse Creek lands. The sight of the Delaware swept Milda with memories of a beloved river in Latvia. The avid outdoorswoman spent many satisfying hours fishing the Delaware for shad, eels and other freshwater delights.

Always generous with good advice like, “If you buy bread and can’t understand the ingredients, don’t eat it,” Milda was an organic gardener and avid mushroom hunter, or, as she called them, “meat on one leg.”

The River Reporter was privileged to tell Milda’s story earlier this year when the centenarian celebrated her milestone birthday (www.riverreporter.com/issues/11-02-03/feature.html). Milda was a lifelong animal lover. Contributions in her honor may be made to Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center at 361 Cherry Drive, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
