Arthur J. “Smitty” Smith of Shohola, PA, a long time resident of the area, died Monday, August 15, 2011 at Twin Cedars Senior Living in Shohola. He was 84.

He was born September 17, 1926 in New York City, the son of the late John Patrick and Jennie Kasten Smith.

Arthur was married for 40 years to Elvira “Babe” Smith, who died in 1988.

He worked as a district superintendent for the New York City Sanitation Dept.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 1st Cavalry Field 182nd Infantry. He was a life member of the American Legion Post # 1363, Eldred, NY; the VFW Post # 5635, Lackawaxen, PA; the AM VETS; and the DAV.

A family statement reads: “A loving man who will be missed by all.”

He is survived by longtime companion Marie Vernon of Shohola; daughters Karen Pearson and husband Gary of Myrtle Beach, SC and Jean Ryan of Gouldsboro, PA; brother Edward Smith and wife Mildred of Staten Island; sister Gladys Johnson and husband Al of Smyrna, DE; grandchildren Keith Pearson, Kelly Lapiska, Greg Pearson, Jenna Ryan and Joelle Ryan; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

He is also predeceased by sons Michael E. Smith and Thomas J. Smith.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 17 at Gray-Parker Funeral Home, Port Jervis, NY.

Burial with military honors was at Montoza Cemetery, Barryville, NY.
