On Saturday April 2, 2011, William “Bill” Carlson passed away in Palm Coast, FL. He was 86.

He was born in Kingston, NY to the late George Arthur Carlson and Jenny Carlson on October 23, 1924.

He graduated from the Hurleyville School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. After returning, he worked in Peck’s Market in Hurleyville, NY while he attended school to become a licensed meat cutter. He worked as a truck driver for Schmidt’s Wholesale and then returned to work at Tarry Brae Golf Course as a groundskeeper. He retired in 2010 after 20 years.

He was a member of the Hurleyville Fire Department for 65 years, serving as past president and chief. He was Hurleyville Fire District Commissioner, past president of the Sullivan County Volunteer Fireman’s Assn. and a member of the Sullivan County Fire Police. He was also a member of the Hudson Valley Volunteer Fireman’s Assn (HVVFA); the Royal Order of the Blue Vests; American Legion Post # 0109 and the Liberty Elks #1545. He was also a member of the Hurleyville United Methodist Church.

Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen Jacobson Carlson at home; son Mark William Carlson and wife Lorayne of Oxford, NY; daughter Toni McKay and husband Robert E. Sr. of Jeffersonville, NY; daughter Teri DiMarsico and husband Tom of Palm Coast.; grandchildren Christopher William Carlson and partner Michael Nebiker of Cumming, GA., Erica Payne and husband Charlie of Hurleyville and Mariann Bury and husband Darren of Cochecton, NY; and a large extended family including step-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by sister Mary Carlson Tremper.

Funeral services were held at the Hurleyville Fire House on Saturday, April 9 with burial following at the Hurleyville Cemetery.
