George Joseph Pomes of Port Jervis, NY, a lifetime resident of the area, died Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after a long illness. He was 82.

He was born August 18, 1928 in Sparrowbush, NY, the son of the late George P. and the late Ann M. Flannery Pomes. He was married for 47 years to Marjorie Ferguson Pomes, who died July 30, 1998.

George was a 1946 graduate of Port Jervis High School. He worked at the A&P in Port Jervis for 49 years, retiring as a butcher.

George served as an assistant Little League coach and was chairman of the Port Jervis Cancer Support Group for several years. He was a member of the Port Jervis ZBA and the Port Jervis IDA. He was a member and participant in the Perpetual Adoration Group at St. Mary’s R.C. Church in Port Jervis.

A family statement reads, in part: “Dad was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an extremely compassionate person, as evidenced by his many friends. He remained close and was a father like figure to his extended family of nieces and nephews.

Surviving are sons Gary Pomes and wife Kathleen of Milford, PA and Richard Pomes and wife Linda of Cochecton Center, NY; brother Francis Pomes of Port Jervis, NY; sister Noel Balch of Matamoras, PA; grandchildren Christina, Matthew, Mary Beth and Michael Pomes; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 7 with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Port Jervis, with Rev. George Hafemann officiating. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Port Jervis, NY.
