Peace group “Occupies” Honesdale
November 22, 2011 —
In sympathy with the growing “Occupy” movement in cities of America and elsewhere, protesting the unfairness of the economic system symbolized by Wall Street, a group of Wayne County residents secured permission from the Borough of Honesdale to set up a camp.
The group occupied Central Park from 6 p.m. on Friday, November 18 through 10 a.m. on Sunday, November 20.
During the day, they had access to bathrooms in the Grace Episcopal Church Parish House on Church Street, just south of the park.
“We are in a semi-residential neighborhood,” said Kathy Dodge as the weekend was beginning. Dodge, one of the organizers who is also a member of Wayne Peace, a local advocacy group for world peace, said, “As we want to be respected, so we commit to showing respect for our neighbors. There will be no open fires, no amplifiers and no drugs or alcohol. The time may come later for ignoring or defying rules, but right now is not that time.”
