Himalayan Yoga Café to close

News of the closing of the Himalayan Institute’s Yoga Café on Main Street sent shocks reverberating through the local community well beyond Honesdale.

Bonnie Robinson’s reaction was typical of many others who frequented the café over the eight years of it history. “This is the hub of my joy. What am I going to do? Where will I go? I am a teacher and run a retreat center and purchase many things related to my business here.”

The café offered workshops, hosted gatherings and had a well-appointed store carrying books, clothing and yoga- and meditation-related goods, in addition to an espresso bar, healthy sandwiches and desserts.

The building, which is located at 630 Main Street, will be open until January 31 unless some unforeseen circumstances close it, like the entire staff resigning to look for other jobs.

“It’s unfortunate that we have to do this,” said Matthew Douzart, Himalayan Institute executive director. “We would have loved for it to work out. We put all we could into it and it just didn’t make financial sense.”

Douzart said that the closing was not caused by the recent recession but for deeper financial reasons. “Actually for some reason, the café has been doing better the last two years but
it wasn’t enough,” he said.

The fact that the business operation on the third floor was moved to the main campus in Bethany months ago had nothing to do with the decision to close the building and the cafe.

“We decided to move the operation to the main campus for other reasons than financial,” he said, “We wanted to streamline our operation so it made sense to put it all together in one location.”

A group of local people are planning to meet on January 15 at 1 p.m. at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce Building on Commercial Street, Honesdale to discuss how to replace the café as a meeting place for the community.

I remember this yoga café. I

I remember this yoga café. I use to do yoga routines there in my organic workout clothes. It's sad to know that after 8 years they have to shut it down. I wonder what really happened that force the owner to close it for good.
