Forestburgh original ‘Three Little Pigs’ returns

July 7, 2011

FORESTBURGH, NY — This summer, the Forestburgh Theatre Arts Center (FTAC) will return to the tradition of presenting an original show in its children’s theatre series. “The Three Little Pigs,” debuting on Thursday, July 7 at 11 a.m., is an original adaptation of the children’s tale about three little pigs and a hungry wolf’s pursuit to capture them. The production will run throughout the summer, alternating performances with “The Wizard of Oz” on Thursdays and Saturdays at 11 a.m.

The show is one of the most successful original children’s shows that the Playhouse has produced. Its first incarnation was in 2005, and since then, the show has been produced all over the county, receiving a rave review from The New York Times in 2007. Laurel Graeber wrote of the Manhattan Children’s Theatre production, “This show offers amusing slapstick with rousing rockabilly tunes that keep the sentiments from becoming saccharine.”

The premise of the adaptation is that the pigs form a successful singing group at the encouragement of their mother. However, the Big Bad Wolf comes to town with his manager Ray Coon and creates animosity amongst the group.

It is only after he tears down their homes (with the traditional refrain of “not by the hair of my chinny chin chin”) and kidnaps their mother that the pigs reunite to save the day. It is a story about family, courage and self-appreciation.
