Roscoe officially wins Ultimate Fishing Town contest
May 24, 2011 —
Roscoe was declared on June 6 the official winner of the World Fishing Network's Ultimate Fishing Town contest.
Congressman Maurice Hinchey welcomed the news saying, "For many years, we've referred to Roscoe, New York as Trout Town USA. Today, after hundreds of thousands of votes from around the world have been cast, the birthplace of dry fly fishing now holds a new title: 'America's Ultimate Fishing Town.' I congratulate Roscoe on bringing this victory to shore and thank all those who voted online to reel this one in.
When the news surfaced last week, Sullivan County Manager David Fanslau issued an email saying, “I want to thank Sullivan County residents and visitors for their continued and strong support for the county's tourism and economy by voting in the online contest that boosted Roscoe, New York to be named as the Ultimate Fishing Town. Roscoe came from behind Tuesday morning, making up an 11,000 vote deficit, to ultimately lead by about 2,200 votes at the close of the contest at 6:00 PM Tuesday night.”
In the final tally that appeared on the network’s web site, Roscoe had scored more than 720,000 votes. The network will officially announce the winner on June 6. An announcement on the site says, “All votes received to date are considered ‘unofficial’ until WFN has reviewed to verify authenticity.”
In recent days and weeks the link for voting has been spread by such diverse groups as Catskill Mountainkeeper and the Sullivan County Visitors Association.
Roscoe, which is informally known as Trout Town, USA, is widely considered to be the birthplaces of American Dry Fly Fishing.
County legislator Elwin Wood said, "The Greater Roscoe Community thrives on an active fishing season, and the tourism impacts increase exponentially, which increases sales tax revenues, and promotes business for Sullivan County's small business enterprises.
Congressman Maurice Hinchey also sent kudos to the hamlet. He said, “Winning this contest doesn't just prove once and for all that no other town in America has better fishing. It also demonstrates how deeply passionate this community is about getting the word out to the rest of the country that anglers should consider a visit to the Catskills. I know firsthand just how good the fishing is in Roscoe. The scenic and storied fishing streams extend for miles and make for a truly outstanding recreational experience.”
