Ritz Company Playhouse benefit slapstick performance

August 6, 2014

HAWLEY, PA — The Ritz Company Playhouse will do a benefit performance of its slapstick musical farce “Merrily We Dance and Sing” on Saturday, August 9 at 8 p.m. A portion of the proceeds for the evening’s performance will go to support the Wayne County Historical Society (WCHS).

“Merrily We Dance and Sing” is slapstick, madcap musical farce with music and lyrics by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore with additional music by Ed Alton. The plot (as described on vanzandtmilmore.com) revolves around the performance of an original operetta called “The Naughty Boy” by a small-town community theatre group. During the performance an escaped mental patient gets loose in the theater—eventually hiding from the local police on the stage—which forces the actors to improvise new plot lines, rewrite dialogue, and take the opportunity to invent their own happy endings. “Imagine Gilbert & Sullivan meet the Marx Brothers.”

Tickets are on sale now for $12. They can be purchased at the WCHS museum (810 Main St. in Honesdale), reserved with a credit card over the phone by calling the museum at 570/253-3240, or purchased the night of the performance. Be sure to mention the WCHS at the box office when purchasing.
