New York gets 25 new judges

June 25, 2014

MONTICELLO, NY — The New York State Senate gave final passage on June 20 to legislation that will help alleviate a backlog of cases in the state’s family courts by creating 25 new family court judgeships. Currently, 700,000 family court cases are heard each year by 153 family court judges statewide. Under this bill, a new judgeship will be established in a total of 16 counties outside of New York City, and nine in New York City, over the next two years.

Sen. John Bonacic said, “Our family courts across the state are struggling to handle larger caseloads and more complex cases, and that strain is having a huge negative impact on children and families who need immediate intervention or are seeking justice. The addition of 25 new judgeships will go a long way toward addressing this problem by giving the state’s family justice system the resources it needs to protect vulnerable children and families.”
